Destruction of mangrove forests

Coastal communities in East Africa depend on mangrove ecosystems for employment, livelihoods and food. In recent decades, these coastal areas have been urbanized at an unprecedented rate. Mangrove forests have been converted to other land uses. Combined with a lack of effective management, mangroves have been overexploited and logged. The destruction of mangrove forests has also contributed to the loss of key habitats for many organisms, threatening the survival of these poor communities and pushing them deeper into poverty.

Restoring mangrove forests, one tree at a time

With your support, we are restoring mangrove forests. This project aims to empower poor coastal communities to break the cycle of poverty. By restoring a mangrove estuary rich in biodiversity, the project will provide fishing grounds for the local population. This helps generate additional sources of income, including sustainable produce from mangrove forests. Restored forests will also help stabilize coastlines and act as a key line of defense to protect land and communities from tropical storms.
